Review: 'English Vinglish'

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Cast: Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou, and Sujata Kumar; Director: Gauri Shinde

Sridevi may have just won the hearts of millions of middle-class Indian housewives with her flawless performance in "English Vinglish". Every minute spent watching the film is worth the time we've all been waiting to see the actress back in action.

Sridevi plays Shashi, a middle-class homemaker with exceptionally good parenting and laddoo-making skills. Her only purpose in life has been taking extremely good care of her family despite being ridiculed by her own children and husband at her poor English-speaking ability.

Along the course, Shashi gets to travel to the US for a family wedding, where persuaded by an advertisement, she signs up for 'Learn English in 4 Weeks' crash course and what follows is best watched on screen.

The character Sridevi plays on screen is very close to the character she's been playing off-screen. She's returned after 15 years doing something that she was portrayed doing in the first half of the film. She was taking care of her own daughters all these years to date where she's certain that they don't need her support.

The language-speaking impediment was merely used as a tool to help the audience connect with the character on a more emotional level.

This is not the story of one Shashi, but thousands like her in this country who are subjected to daily embarrassment and looked at as an experienced hand only in the kitchen.

Debutante director Gauri Shinde deserves what many filmmakers don't even deserve in today's significantly changing cinema - a standing ovation. The biggest difference between Gauri and other filmmakers is the fact the she didn't expect Sridevi to return as a star, but as an actress she's always known and cheered for.

Sridevi trades her glamorous yesteryear look for a mature, homely Indian look covered in chiffon sari that will make every mother-in-law in this country look at her 'bahu' and say, why can't you be like her. You may discard Sri's character as very Indian, but it isn't because she plays someone who is blessed with the ability to enjoy life's smallest triumphs. This is the same quality that makes everyone root for her at every step.

Shinde-Sridevi tag team may very well be the best we've had in years and one can proudly vouch for that after watching the film.

The relationship between Shashi and Satish, her husband, is handled deftly by Gauri, as she succeeds in portraying a typical 'I'm the king of the family' type of role. The way Satish distances from Shashi without making it look obvious is a brilliantly handled role by Adil Husain.

The depth of their relationship is brought forth when Shashi asks him: "If you can casually hug your friend in a mall, then why I don't get to be hugged even when we are close to each other".

Specially memorable are her scenes with her French co-star Mehdi Nebbou who is so splendidly supportive, we forget what a major star he is in France. Each time the two get passionate and emotional about one another, they speak in their native tongues, certain that their words would not impede the meaning of their thought expression.

Gauri should also be appreciated for roping in Amitabh Bachchan/Ajith ( for Bollywood/ South) for a little cameo. Priya Anand marks her Bollywood debut  as niece perectly suited the role. Adil Hussain  as Sridevi husband, Sulbha Deshpande as granny, Mehdi Nebbou  and Sivansh all are superb in their roles.

Shinde gets a tremendous boost from cinematographer Laxman Utekar who captures New York in its quiet mellow state of bustling grace; composer Amit Trivedi's music simply and fluently melts into the theme and storytelling; and editor Hemanti Sarkar cuts the footage the way Shashi would cut her vegetables, precisely, lovingly and without anxiety.

Finally, The film was loved equally by one and all because even after 15 years, Sridevi has command over her language, be it Telugu, Tamil or Hindi, and she speaks with confidence, while her shaky-shrill voice works suitably in favour of her character.

To sum it up, "English Vinglish" proves that language is only a mode of communication, but not something that can be used to divide people. Go and watch it.

To that we can add,if you watch only two films every year make sure you see "English Vinglish" twice!

Review: Boochi

Presenter: Eros International

Direction: Ram Gopal Varma

Producer: Jitendra Jain

Music: Sandeep Chautha

Starring: JD. Chakravarthy, Manisha Koirala, Madhu Shalini and others

Rating-1.75/5.0

Story

Tarun (JD. Chakravarthy), Namrata (Manisha Koirala) shift to a new rented house along with their two kids. They will be joined by Tarun's sister Pooja(Madhu Shalini) who comes there to spend her summer vacation. However suddenly Tarun's daughter Nimmi starts behaving abnormally and says she is playing with a ghost named Shabhu. However Nimmi parents thinks she was just having hallucinations and she will be alright with the passage of time. However their servant Lakshman believes she is in conversation with ghosts and souls and tells them those can be driven away once traditional rituals were done. In the midst of all this family starts hearing some strange sounds and even servant goes missing abruptly. Pooja fixes CC cameras to find out the truth. To find out the secret behind all these happenings, one should fix date with Boochi.

Performance

The entire film revolves around JD. Chakravarthy, Manisha Koirala, Madhu Shalini and the child artist. None of them got chance to perform as the entire film was shot in utter darkness depicting night. Except for the last ten minutes no one can see any thing, and movie lovers were able to watch their acting only in climax. Child artist attracted all with her action in climax. Others played their role accordingly.

Analysis

watching the movie one will be wondering what happened to RGV's creative directorial and screenplay talents. Lot of loopholes in the story, insipid screenplay, uninspiring storyline and the way roles were churned disappoint even die hard fans of RGV.

Technical

Sandeep Chautha's music is uninspiring and leaves a lot to be desired. He failed miserably in scaring people with his background score. Cinematography also disappoints all. RGV manages to scare all with his story and not with horror flick.

Final Talk

RGV is still basking under past glory. Time will come when even that won't attract movie lovers if he makes these kind of films.

Makkhi

Starring: Sudeep, Samanth Ruth Prabhu, Nani; Directed by: S.S. Rajamouli

This is a love triangle with a twist. It's a story of a man, woman and... a fly! By now we've all heard of Rajamouli's "Eega" cracking box office records in Tamil. The Hindi version comes to us with a tremendous pre-release expectations. Shall we just say we were "Eega" to see this film?

"Makkhi" doesn't disappoint. Not by a long shot. It's a fiercely original and engaging piece of cinema replete with special effects that endow human qualities on a fly, making it a cool tool of vendetta.

Yup, the fly creates quite a buzz! Specially around the film's antagonist Sudeep's ears, as it tortures the hell out of the villain who had bumped off the leading lady's angelic suitor, little realizing that he, the suitor, would be reborn as a fly.

On paper, "Makkhi" must have sounded like a corny adventure saga about a fly's vendetta spree against a man who would go to any lengths to win over a girl who rebuffs his every gesture.

Sudeep's effectual destruction by the fly has to be seen to be believed. To bring variations into the fly's various means of torturing his adversary to death requires Herculean plotting and planning. Director Rajmouli excels in giving a human life to the fly.

In spite of the inherent repetitiveness of the concept (in how many ways can a fly ..er, fly?), the narrative's pace never slackens. The special effects are incredibly adept. Full marks to Kannada actor Sudeep for creating an exacerbrated tension in a fight that is unequal from Round 1.

Interestingly as the fly-hero's vendetta intensifies, Sudeep's character begins to appear comically vulnerable. By the time he gets unequivocally murderous we share Sudeep's sentiments completely.

Aur nahin buzz aur nahin!

In theory, it's a very shaky plot on which to build a whole film but Rajamouli's sure-handed direction puts a zing into the buzz. There is no dearth of innovative moments in the script. The sharp clenched narrative doesn't let go of a single occasion to allow the fight to finish between the fly and his killer.

Honestly, who would expect a film entitled "Makkhi" to fly like a bird? Rajamouli's ingenious idea and skilfull storytelling take us completely by surprise. Gutsy sly and original, this is the entertainer of the season. Not only is Sudeep in top form, even Samantha Ruth as his object of adoration is sweetly effective.

Another unmistakable plus is M.M. Kreem's music. The songs come on at opportune spaces in the storytelling. The background music nails the funny-sad-daring plot. A word about the Hindi dubbing. It's so well-synchronized with the original Tamil dubbing that nothing is lost in translation.

Besides, a fly really doesn't speak. And it is the hero of this cocky clever and compelling film.

This may not be the classic waiting to be re-discovered. But "Makkhi" holds our attention right to the end. It is a conventional love story turned into a ferociously innovative saga by one masterstoke.

By the end of it we no longer wonder, why a fly? We're too busy cheering the fly which knows its mind better than Peter Proud ever did.

Long live reincarnation.
